First Kiss – The Fairy Tale and The Reality

First kisses are suffused with magic. The anticipation, the build up, the darting looks, the butterflies in your stomach. That first momentous moment when your lips touch and the whole world fades away.

I wanted my first kiss to be like a fairy tale.  I wanted it to be Buttercup and Wesley or Scarlett and Rhett, earth shattering, unstoppable, a force of nature.  Which is probably how I made it to 17 without ever being kissed, no one was quite good enough.

Until someone was, he made me laugh and he was smart and cute and tall and skinny and like no one I had ever met. He could talk about anything and he was so sure of what he wanted and where he was going. He made me feel special and interesting and safe and out of control all at the same time.

Gradually we inched into a friendship. Then on a cold February night, after an evening at the pub, he asked me to be his girlfriend.

As he walked me home I didn’t notice the wind whipping at my coat or the light drizzle in the air, I was too giddy with excitement and nerves. After all the anticipation could a kiss, even from this brilliant, beautiful boy, ever live up to the movie in my head?

Outside my house we faced each other and removing our gloves entwined our fingers, then he moved closer and I closed my eyes. Our first kiss was awkward and rushed and strange. We broke apart and stood blinking at each other in the streetlights. Then we both laughed and tried again. It was still strange but also exciting and stomach flippingly good.

For days afterwards I replayed the moment in my head over and over, a smile on my face as I hugged the reality of my first kiss to me.

The inspiration for this post came from reading Robin’s post for the Scribbit Write Away contest.  I just couldn’t resist joining in, my first kiss memories still make me all gooey. In case you were wondering the very cute, very smart, very good kisser was T.

  • I love your writing M&T. Gorgeous story.

  • Wesley and Buttercup :) That’s a cute image!

  • Was that hubby? Cause that’s adorable.

  • What a great story. :)

You made me reminisce of my first real kiss, not the little pecks of children but a real kiss with a boy. I was at the skating rink, met a boy and we skated together, while couple skating he leaned in to kiss me and our lips touched. I was 14, he was 15 and he lived a ways away from me, in a different school district. We exchange phone numbers and for a year we talked on the phone and wrote letters to each other. When he turned 16 and got his license I was allowed to go out on a date with him (surprising for my extremely protective parents) and we ended up dating until I was 18. Ah, my first love. :)

  • so sweet. so very sweet!

  • That’s really sweet. And your writing is great! I grew up in the theatre and we were always trying to be all cosmopolitan and cool and kissed “hello” and “goodbye” and “thank you for the flowers” and “great show”, etc. so I really can’t pinpoint my first kiss. Sad, isn’t it? I’ll live vicariously through you though!

  • Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, I love it!!!! =) Sooooooooooooooooo very sweet!!!!

Mr. “S” and I first kissed in his brothers back yard at a party! lol!!!! Lets just say there was NO build up! It just happened! It floored us both! I don’t know where it came from…it took my by complete surprise! It was crazy! I will have to say it was the BEST kiss we’ve ever shared! It was so very passionate, spontaneous…it was like fireworks were going off all around us and we didn’t have a clue! Let me just say the fireworks could have been from me getting zapped by the neighbors electric fence! HA!

I tried to hop their fence and ride their horse…lol…yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking! It seemed like a GREAT idea at the moment!

What a crazy night! Yes, there was alcohol involved!

  • Awwww – a kiss good enough to relive and enjoy for days afterwards! Very sweet!

  • I don’t think it gets any better than “stomach flippingly good”!
    :-)
