Neurotic Me?

Oh yes! Despite two doctors, three books and umpteen people telling me it was fine to get my hair highlighted in the second trimester, as my lovely hairdresser put the first foil strips in, I freaked.

So I still have Britney (going through her bad stage) roots and will have for another 16 weeks.

T thinks I am overly neurotic and keeps sending me articles on dirt being good for babies immune systems! I think I will be fine once he is actually here (well maybe a little over protective) but its the whole not being able to see him that kills me. I mean I can feel him but I’d like to see he is okay.

Also I had a Wicked inspired dream where I dyed my hair and he came out green!

****

Totally unrelated vote please when you use quite (as in quite good, quite nice) do you mean “completely” or “fairly”. I’m trying to win an argument so let’s hope you vote for the correct one!

5-5-5

I got tagged by Lady Glamis of The Macbeths. Which is great as I have nothing else to post about.

The rules are: Find the 5th pic in your 5th pic folder and share, then tag 5 friends.

Unfortunately the fifth folder is my last folder due to the great photo loss, Mac Book melt down of 2008!

IMG_0113.JPG

This was taken at Rock Creek Park last weekend with ice covering the stream and a grey sky over head. This weekend is was glorious and packed with people. The weather is very strange at the moment!

I’m disobeying the rules and not tagging but is you want to play go right ahead.

Coraline

MV5BMzQxNjM5NzkxNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzg5NDMwMg@@._V1._SX94_SY140_.jpg

We went to see Coraline in 3D at the weekend and I loved it. It is a fabulous story and deliciously scary, in the way the Queen from Snow White was utterly terrifying when I was little.

I’ve got to get the book now, I love Neil Gaiman, I don’t know how he comes up with these things.

Anyone else seen it?

The Name Game

I have always had a particular name in mind for my son but now I’m having a son I’ve changed my mind.

Now the original name, T also liked a lot (possibly because it was his Grandfather’s name too). When we were discussing I mentioned this other name and he joked we could call the next one that. Except now I’m thinking what if the next one is a girl? I’ll never get to use this name and I really do think I prefer it.

It’s the name of one of my all time favourite characters from one of my all time favourite books (no it isn’t Edward I’m not that sad!) and even better I recently found out the author named the character after a different character in one of mine and T’s favourite childhood books. So I kind of like the connection. T isn’t so sure about naming our child after a book character though.

So today’s question is – how did you pick your child’s name? Or if you don’t have children yet do you have a name in mind and how did you pick it? Is it a family name, a popular name, old fashioned, after a favourite character, favourite person? Or did your parents ever tell you how you got your name. Come on share your stories.

New York

So Snow did not get the message about our love affair being kaput and followed me to New York; making walking the streets highly unpleasent but it did give me some ideas for a writing piece I had to do for my class

>(which you can read here if you are so inclined).

So my feelings have mellowed somewhat.

I spent Friday, in a variety of starbucks resting and hiding from the snow and wind) and in MoMa. I was a little disappointed as last year they had a brilliant exhibition on Georges Seurat, which I loved and was looking forward to seeing again. Sadly it was temporary and had been replaced by Margaret Dumas. Now I am no art critic, basically I like things which are pretty, so her painting were not my thing. They re seriously depressing.

There was an excellent exhibit on the history of printing and photography which I loved though and wish I’d made notes on as I’ve forgotten most it. I also saw the Water Lilies. Sadly Starry Night (which I had a poster of as a student, do any students not have some famous reproduction on their wall?) was on loan somewhere else.

In the evening we went to T’s favourite Steak restaurant, where he had half a cow and I had delicious Vegetable risotto. Then we went for a drink at The Waldorf Astoria, slight mistake, that place is expensive! It was fun though and someone was having a wedding reception, I love seeing weddings.

Superbowl Sunday

So I actually got quite excited about the superbowl last night. I liked that long run down the pitch – why isn’t there more of that? And that last winning catch was freakin’ impressive. I did feel sorry for the Cardinals, they were scrappy and I love under dog victories. Although someone fill me in can you not get red carded in American Football because there was some vicious behaviour on that pitch, or rough play as the Ref quaintly called it.

So onto the food and the commercials, which seems the main point of the game!

Our food was yummy I made guacamole and brownies and T made some fabulous chill. I learnt a new tip for making Guacamole too. After is is done and you put it in the fridge press the cling flim right down onto and it doesn’t go brown! Maybe everyone knew this already but I was very excited.

The commercials were pretty rubbish especially Budweiser – rubbish beer, rubbish ad frankly. The Hula one was best, I love Alec Baldwin, he is too funny.
I also loved the singing advert for tonight’s return of Heroes and Chuck. How excited am I about Monday night TV? Chuck, Peter Petrelli, Chuck Bass and Jack – yay!

Lastly the half time show was hilarious Bruce has been doing his yoga and that camera slam – perfect!

To quote Lorelai Gilmore . . .

. . .me and snow the love affair is over!

Yesterday day when it was spiraling down from the sky it was magical and I loved it and I sat enchanted watching it and taking photos.

Today, when it has turned the pavements into deathtraps and I had to spend 10 minutes scraping the car clean, I’ve decided that I’ve grown out of it (unless I’m about to Ski on it).

Anyway apart from moaning about the snow/ice I’m very happy because I get to go to New York again tomorrow! T has to go for work so all we have to pay is my train fare, a bargain really. I’m planning on a trip to MoMa and then we’re going to a very yummy steak house we discovered last time we went and coming back early Saturday Morning. I can’t wait.

Loot!

I love mail and I especially love mail when it’s unexpected so I was thrilled when a mysterious box arrived on Saturday and even more thrilled when it contained lots and lots of books!

A huge thank you to Joelle who very kindly sent me a selection her ARC. I can not wait to read them. My first choice has to be Need because it has such a gorgeous cover.DSC00941.JPG

I’ll let you know if it’s as good as it looks.

Joelle also very kindly sent DC his first gift. A Winnie the Pooh knife and Fork. I adore Winnie the Pooh and these are the cutest, so another big thanks Joelle.

And in other news I have a new blog, one all about writing, so I don’t go on to much about it here. So you can check it out here, if you are so inclined, nothing up yet but there will be.

Random Friday things

I’m totally in love with the Neti pot – Thank you AFF for introducing it to me! It sounds vile and disgusting but is actually very soothing if you have sinus trouble but aren’t allowed to shove drugs up your nose.

TV is good again – yay! Not only do I have House but 24, Battlestar Galactica (please, please let Lee and Kara end up together) and Lost. I don’t know how anyone can claim you can switch off your brain while watching TV, Lost needs epic amounts of concentration!

I am at 39,000 words of the novel.

Decaf tea just does not taste the same. The first thing I am having is a cup of tea, followed by oysters, followed by red wine. These things are standard in maternity wards right?

I have joined the library, seeing as the pound is crashing, I’m trying to save money and books are one of my main expenses.

I’m reading Graceling and it is fantastic, honestly go and buy this book or get it out the library!

Talking of books I wonder how I can get a ARC of Catching Fire because I’m not sure I can wait until September to find out what happens to Katniss, Peeta and Gale.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Edit – I just checked my blog stats (which i try not to be obessive about) and this week several people have landed here while googling “is marmite good for pregnant women?” to which I say of course!  not just yummy but full of Vitamin B12!

The year you were born

I’ve decided to make DC a “The Year you were born” book with something that happened every month. I hope he will think it is a cool keepsake in the future. As a child I remember being fascinated by stories of before I was born.

Obviously January will be all about the Inauguration, I’m going to put in our pictures and print off the speech. But also I’m going to put in the Hudson River plane story because it was so amazing and also answers his Mum’s long asked question “why are you giving me a life jacket when I’m thousands of miles above the water?” Now I know.

_45381159_006729121-1.jpg

I’m also going to put in some stuff about our day to day life, price of milk, petrol etc (should be a great resource for history projects!) and photos of us.

So what do you think? Nice idea? Oh and if you hear of any cute news stories do send them my way. I don’t want the whole book to be full of wars and the crashing economy, although I will include them of course.
